African jail SAN DIEGO (AP) An American college student who was jailed for four days in South Africa after crusading for an end to apartheid has arrived home but says he would like to return to continue working against racial separation. Scott Daugherty, 19, said he didn't think he ever would get out of the Cape Town jail after he and more than 200 others were arrested when police raided a church June 15.
He was released four days later. "They didn't let me know I was being released until halfway to the security (police) station," he said, in an impromptu news conference after his flight landed Lindbergh Field in San Diego Saturday night. "I was told that I would be denied consulate access until I was released which would be at the end of the state of emergency," he said. (Daugherty is the brother of Jean Daugherty of Durham, who had expressed fears about his well-being.) Daugherty, a student at Humboldt State University in Arcata, said he was detained briefly by security police June 12, when officials found him in possession of 2,000 pamphlets advertising a meeting. Although the meeting was actually a regular church service, Daugherty said police believed the gathering to be an illegal meeting of blacks.
Daugherty and another man were the only whites at the service in the church, which was raided by security police. "We ran because they had very long sticks with leadlike points at the end," Daugherty said. He and the others were taken to the Cape Town jail, where Daugherty was held in a single cell about three paces long with a toilet and a cot inside. He said the guards treated him well. "They really don't like the political situation, and they don't like the security police," Daugherty said.
Daugherty said he was told to leave South Africa immediately as a condition of his release.
